When the Old Stuff Has to Go
Old insulation removal is the first step when what is in the attic, kneewall space or crawl space is causing more problems than it solves. Insulation soaked by ice dam leaks clumps and stays damp against the ceiling. Mice and squirrels nest in old fill. Decades of storage crush it flat. In every case, it also hides the gaps that need sealing. Clearing it gives a clean surface to air seal and a fresh start.
How removal works
Loose fill comes out through a large vacuum hose into bags or a collection unit outside, so it does not travel through your rooms. Batts are bagged by hand. In triple-deckers and row houses with tight access, we plan the hose route and protect stairs and hallways. Once the space is clear, we seal the floor and install new insulation to the depth you choose.
Vermiculite and asbestos
Some older homes have vermiculite attic fill, a light, pebbly material that is gray-brown or gold. Some vermiculite contains asbestos. It should be tested before anyone disturbs it. If it contains asbestos, removal is a job for a licensed abatement contractor. Boston's insulation barriers guidance notes that asbestos in certain areas has to be removed before insulation work, and that a HEAT Loan at 0% can cover barrier fixes like vermiculite. We point it out and do not disturb it.
Spray foam removal
Foam that was sprayed over a leak or never cured properly sometimes has to come out. That means cutting and scraping by hand. HomeGuide lists foam removal at $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot; Fixr says hand-chipped removal can reach about $5.
After an inspection or a leak
Many removal jobs follow a buyer's inspection or a roof leak. We give a written scope and price, explain what caused the damage and make sure the cause is addressed before new insulation goes in.

Old Insulation Removal Questions
Does old insulation always need to come out?
No. Dry, clean insulation can stay. Removal makes sense when it is wet, moldy, soiled or blocking air sealing.
What does vermiculite look like?
Light, pebbly granules, gray-brown or gold. Leave it alone and get it tested.
How long does removal take?
Many attics are cleared in a day. Tight triple-decker access or heavy contamination can add time.
