About Boston Spray Foam Insulation
Boston Spray Foam Insulation air seals and insulates homes across Boston's neighborhoods and the cities and towns that border them. We spray closed-cell and open-cell foam, dense-pack cellulose into closed walls, blow loose fill into attics and remove old insulation that has failed.
Greater Boston's housing is old. Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, West Roxbury and Brighton all grew as streetcar suburbs in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the cities around them, like Somerville, Cambridge, Medford and Quincy, have even older roots. That means triple-deckers and two-families with stacked porches, Victorians with complicated rooflines, and Capes and colonials from the early and middle 20th century. Most were built with little or no insulation and plenty of air leaks.
How we approach a house
- Every floor, top to bottom. We look at the attic or roof cavity, the outside walls, any finished attic rooms and the basement.
- Barriers first. City guidance on insulation barriers notes that knob-and-tube wiring was common until the 1940s and that asbestos in certain areas has to be dealt with before insulating. We look for both and tell you what we find.
- A written plan. Each area gets its own line with material, thickness or depth, R-value target and price.
- Respect for the building. Plaster, trim and siding are protected or put back. Interior patches are left ready for paint.
- Tenants considered. In multi-unit buildings we plan the schedule so each unit knows when to expect us.
